Acquired Brain Injury Survivors of Southeast Louisiana

Acquired Brain Injury Survivors (ABIS) of Southeast Louisiana is a non-profit organization formed in 1996.  Our goal is to provide a comfortable arena for those who have brain injuries, as well as their family members. ABIS is dedicated to providing assistance through peer support and encouragement, social rehabilitation, information distribution, resource sharing, and therapeutic activities.  Current members are brain injured to varying degrees.  Origin of injury varies from brain cancer to traumatic injury due to collision and/or impact.   We want to help all brain-injured people in our community.

ABIS offers:

  • A place for discussion of our impairment
  • A way to understand how these changes affect us and our loved ones
  • Achieving a sense of balance and belonging
  • Sharing of adaptive tools we have used in our daily lives
  • Providing an opportunity for sharing feelings and our losses
  • Reinforcing our self-worth and celebrating our rebirth
  • Facing the challenge of having an "invisible" injury and educating the public

Our support group conducts counseling and sharing sessions as well as activities such as arts and crafts that foster self-expression.  Speakers, guests or members present topics ranging from medical research to practical life strategies.  We have all had a life-changing event and we are trying to help one another along.

Currently, our Support Group meets the second Saturday of each month at 1:00 pm in the conference room at the Rosedale branch of the Jefferson Parish Library located at 4036 Jefferson Highway, Jefferson, Louisiana.

Please call us at (504) 849-9069.  Please also check out our website at http://abigroup.homestead.com/.  You can sign up for our newsletter so you can keep informed about the activities planned for the Acquired Brain Injury Survivors of Southeast Louisiana.  Our mailing address is:
