Miriam Hirsch

Miriam Hirsch was born in Abbeville, Louisiana January 9, 1947 and believes she was born to be an artist. Hirsch attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana, and despite family resistance, she majored in Fine Arts and double minored in English and History finishing in 1972.

Hirsch is a contemporary modernist influenced by the works Kandinsky, Dali, Klee and other European artists. She describes her style as mixed metaphor abstractions in mid-tone colors with strong vertical movement and humor. The four main themes in her work are love, religion, nature and memory. Her colored pencil drawings are described by Jeff Rubin in the New Orleans Art Review as “alive, vigorous and fun”.

Hirsch has participated in exhibitions throughout Louisiana since 1973.  These include art galleries located in New Orleans, Covington, Lafayette, Shreveport and Baton Rouge.  Her work has also been displayed in the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Contemporary Arts Center and Tulane University. Her work has also been displayed in art galleries outside of Louisiana including Pensacola, Houston, and Long Island.

Hirsch has received numerous awards from, but not limited to, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Contemporary Arts Center and the New Orleans Ceramic Society.  Her work is permanently located in collections of the New Orleans Museum of Art, The Loren Rogers Museum of Art in Mississippi and The University of Art Museum in Lafayette, Louisiana.
